POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 20, 2016) — The Vassar College women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over Ramapo College at Gordon Field on Thursday.
"I'm happy with the way we're playing right now," coach Corey Holton said. "I'm happy with the way that we finished again. I think this a good tuneup after the weekend that we had away and heading into two pretty big games in the league."
The Brewers outshot their visitors, 20-5, to pick up their seventh win in eight games. Stephanie Tapolsky made one save over 73 minutes to earn the win for Vassar (8-6-1, 5-1-0 Liberty), while fellow keeper Phoebe Reuben played the remaining 17 minutes to keep the Brewers' fourth shutout of the season intact. On the opposite end, Elizabeth Harvell took the loss for Ramapo (3-8-1, 2-5-0 NJAC), making eight saves over 90 minutes.
The Brewers jumped out to a quick start, scoring their first goal in the sixth minute. Amanda McFarland dribbled down the left side before passing to Audrey Pillsbury, who trickled her fifth goal of the season into the far right side from inside the six.
Keeping up the intensity, the Brewers struck again less than two minutes later. Pillsbury returned the favor, playing a through ball to Jordyn Matthews, who connected from about 20 yards out straight back into the net.
With that, Vassar carried a 2-0 edge into the break before coming out with similar intensity in the second half. Rebecca Andrews dribbled through traffic before slotting her eighth goal of the season into the right of the box in the 58th minute.
"It was a really big team effort today," Andrews said. "Everybody stepped up. A lot of different people got different minutes. It was exciting to see us get a couple of assists too, so that really shows that we're really working together. They were pushing really high, and that was a new thing for us to play against, and I think we did a good job."
Matthews closed scoring in the 78th minute with her second goal of the game. Rory Chipman crossed to her left across the face of the net for Matthews to strike her fourth score of the season into the near left corner.
The Brewers will play their final regular season home game on Tuesday, Oct. 25, hosting the Bard College Raptors. Kickoff from Gordon Field is timed for 3:30 p.m.
