Vassar Field Hockey Game Notes – Union

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 18, 2016) – The Vassar College field hockey will look to continue its winning ways Thursday evening, hosting the Dutchwomen of Union College in the final regular season home game of the campaign for the Brewers. Vassar is coming off a huge 2-1 win over No. 11 Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon, their second consecutive win over a ranked opponent.

Last Time Out: For the second straight game for the Vassar field hockey team, the Brewers defeated a ranked opponent at home, topping No. 11 Skidmore College 2-1 on Senior Day. Vassar came out of the gates quick, scoring in the ninth minute on a tally from sophomore Alyssa More. After Skidmore tied the game in the 24th minute, Vassar potted the eventual game-winning goal at 46:29 on an Emily Poehlein score from junior Storm Sideleau.
 
A Look At The Brewers (11-2, 3-1 Liberty League)
 
  • Vassar College is receiving votes in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Top 20 poll for the second straight week, picking up 114 votes for the No. 21 spot.
  • The Brewers are currently ranked No. 13 according to the Average Computer Ratings at FieldHockeyCorner.com, while earning the No. 1 ranking in the North Atlantic region.
  • Vassar leads the Liberty League in scoring margin with a 2.77 edge on opposition this season, allowing a league-best 0.54 goals per game.
  • Coming into the week, Vassar leads the nation in goals against average so far this year, while sophomore keeper Paige Amico is second in the nation with a 0.63 mark.
  • VC is putting 13.92 shots on goal per game, third-highest in the Liberty League, while taking 271 shots on the year.
  • Sophomore Megan Caveny is currently sixth in the conference in points with 21, as her seven helpers are fourth-most in the Liberty League.
  • Two of the four goals that sophomore Emily Poehlein have scored this season have been game-winners, tying for the team lead. Both have come within Liberty League, as she's one of just two players with two GWG in Liberty League action.
  • Vassar has posted 45 wins over the last four seasons, and now have chalked up at least 11 wins in each of the last four campaigns.
  • The Brewers have five players that have started all 13 games this season: senior Lauren Shumate and Sophie Arnold, sophomores Megan Caveny and Paige Amico, and freshman Cristina Lopez.
  • VC has outscored its opponents 22-2 in the second half this season.
  • The Brewers have clinched a spot in the Liberty League Tournament for the fourth straight season, and can host a playoff game for the first time ever with two wins this week.
  • Over the last three seasons, Vassar has gone 26-1 on its home turf.
  • VC has topped three ranked opponents this season, No. 10 Montclair State, No. 9 Rochester and No. 11 Skidmore. The only two losses for Vassar are to teams that are currently ranked No. 19 (William Smith) and No. 16 (Kean University). 
 
A Look At The Dutchwomen (4-10, 1-4 Liberty League)
 
  • The Dutchwomen of Union College come to town after suffering an overtime loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday, 2-1. In that game, Union saw Hannah Christian score for the fourth time this year.
  • Before Sunday, the previous five goals scored by Union College had come from Charlotte Leyland, as she has nine on the season.
  • The Dutchwomen have lost seven of their last eight games, with the win coming at home against St. Lawrence on October 8.
  • Union has tallied 19 goals this season, which is seventh in the Liberty League, while allowing 37 on the year.
  • UC is the only team in the conference to not attempt at least one penalty stroke.
  • Keeper Laura Aptowitz is having a strong season, leading the conference in saves with 158. She ranks 11th nationally in saves per game with 11.29.
  • Union has made 10 defensive saves on the campaign, which is 26th in Division III field hockey. Lindsay Barson and her six lead the Liberty League and are in the Top 20 as well.
  • Angelina Stewart has posted three goals on the year on just eight shots on goal for UC.
  • Leyland and Alexa Steriti are tied for the team lead with three assists apiece.
  • Leyland has all four game-winners for Union this season.
 
Against Union All-Time: Vassar is 7-21 against Union College all-time, with the Dutchwomen earning wins in each of the last two meetings in Schenectady. Last year, Union topped VC 2-1, but VC has won the past two on Weinberg Field dating back to 2011.
 
Up Next: Vassar has a quick turnaround from Thursday's contest, taking on RPI in Troy, NY on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the final Liberty League contest of the season for the Brewers. VC will find out Sunday evening who and where they will be playing in the Liberty League Tournament.
