Women’s Volleyball Tops Sage In Straight Sets Thursday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 13, 2016) – Sophomore Devan Gallagher highlighted a balanced attack for the Brewer women's volleyball team Thursday evening, as Vassar College topped The Sage College in three sets in non-conference action from Kenyon Hall. VC knocked off the Gators 25-12, 25-20 and 25-15.

The Brewers (16-7) spoiled the evening for an amazing accomplishment for Sage senior setter Rachel Leibig, as she earned her 3000th career assist in the third set. Vassar College continued to lean on its offensive talents, as the Brewers hit .306 for the night which included 42 kills and only 12 assists.

The first set saw the home team hit .536 in the period, but the Gators stayed with VC through the first 20 points as the score was 11-9 after an ace from Katy Rimawi. VC responded with a 14-3 spurt to end the set, as junior Alex Sams opened the contest with five kills on six attempts in the opening game.

In the second game, Sage (10-4) stayed with the Brewers throughout the set, but Gallagher and VC were too much as the sophomore put down seven of her 10 attacks to push VC to a two-set lead. Vassar led by as many as seven at 15-8 on the fourth-straight termination by Gallagher, but the Gators trimmed the VC lead down to two at 22-20 after a kill from Nicole Groll.

The Brewers though would get another finish from Gallagher and an ace from sophomore Annie MacMillan to double their edge. In the fourth, Vassar's defense held the Gators to -.033 hitting and Sams and Gallagher posted three more kills to push the Brewers to another home win. Vassar is now 11-0 at home this season.

Gallagher finished with 14 terminations on 22 attempts, hitting .591, while Sams added a career-best 11 kills. The 11 finishes were one more than her previous record of 10 against Skidmore College September 19, 2015. Junior Bria Corham came off the bench to post four kills but also had a career-high in digs with 11.

MacMillan chalked up 34 assists, five service aces and four digs along with three kills of her own, and senior Sierra Tobin added a team-best 12 digs as well. Sophomore Lauren Ninkovich posted two of Vassar's nine aces on the night, while 10 players had kills on the evening. Freshman Jane McLeod only played the opening set, but finished two of the three of her chances.

"We had a full offense today, pretty much everyone had a kill," said MacMillan. "We had some great power passing, it was flawless tonight, which really allows me to spread the offense out."

Sage was paced by the eight kills from Michayla Berard, but the night for the Gators belonged to Leibig. Her 3000th assist came in the third set, as Alyssa Nellis lofted an attack over the block to give her setter the milestone on her 16th and final helper of the night.

The Brewers will be off for nine days before heading to the final weekend of Liberty League play on October 21-22. Friday evening, VC will take on Union College and St. Lawrence University at Union, before finishing conference action Saturday, October 22 at Skidmore against the home Thoroughbreds and Clarkson University.

"We did a real nice job offensively today…we saw what they were giving us and took advantage," said head coach Jonathan Penn. "We get some time off, so they can come back fresh and focused and ready for a big weekend."
