Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Grinde Records Double-Double in Brewer Loss

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 16, 2016) – Paul Grinde recorded his third double-double of the season in the Vassar College men's basketball team's 78-74 loss to Union College on Saturday.

Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate School) poured in 18 points to go with his career-high 18 rebounds. The freshman center was one of four Brewers to score in double-figures, as Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) also had 18 points, Mickey Adams (Boston, MA/ St. Sebastian's School) added 17 and Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy) finished with 16.

With the loss, the Brewers fall to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Dutchmen improve to 6-8 and 4-3 in the Liberty League.

Browne and Wasyl started the game hot, combining to score the first 16 points for the Brewers with four 3-pointers and then some.

Union led by as many as seven points in the first, but a layup by Alex Seff (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) gave the Brewers their first lead of the game, 22-20, with about eight minutes remaining in the half.

Adams was unstoppable toward the end of the half. The forward, who averaged 3.5 points coming into the contest, scored 12 points in a row for the Brewers to give them a 34-28 edge with just under three minutes remaining.

Adams' 17 total points surpassed his previous-best 10 points, which were scored against Renssaelaer on Tuesday.

Brown scored the next points for Vassar when he laid one in at the buzzer, sending the Brewers into halftime with a 36-32 advantage.

Vassar shot 44 percent to Union's 37 percent from the floor and 50 percent (6-12) to Union's 27 percent (4-15) from 3-point range in the first half.

But in the second half, Union amplified its game to score 52 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three on 6-of-15 shooting.

Three-pointers were the story of the night, as a total of 21 were hit from both teams combined.

Three consecutive triples between Wasyl and Adams gave the Brewers a 54-48 edge with 14:50 remaining. But the Dutchmen answered with an 11-2 run to get ahead three, 59-56. With about five minutes to go, Vassar tied it one more time at 65, but Union would go on to take its largest lead, 74-67, with 1:38 left.

The teams were back-and-forth all night, as the contest featured seven ties and 10 lead changes. The Brewers got within two points twice in the final minute, but ultimately couldn't change the lead one last time.

Led by William Hython's 19 points, four Dutchmen scored in double-digits. Deshon Burgess and Wade McNamara added 15 apiece, while Greg King scored 11 off the bench.

Vassar gets a break from competition before trekking for its three-game road swing, which begins in Rochester against RIT on Friday at 8 p.m.
