DANBURY, CT (September 8, 2015) – Vassar scored a pair of first half goals, then held off Western Connecticut in the second to secure a 2-0 victory over the Colonials Tuesday evening. The shutout win was the first for the Brewers this season, as the team moves to 2-1 on the year. Western Connecticut drops to 3-2.
Vassar outshot the hosts 18-9 in the contest at the Western Athletic Complex, while holding a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Junior Emily Krebs (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) got Vassar on the board in the 20th minute, netting her first of the season to put the Brewers ahead 1-0.
Freshman Arianna Riemma (East Quogue, NY/West Hampton, Beach) notched her first career goal in the  burgundy and gray not long after, finishing off a feed from fellow freshman Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos). Riemma's goal put the visitors up 2-0, and Vassar carried that lead into the half allowing West Conn just one shot in the first half.
VC carried that momentum into the second period, continuing to pressure the Colonials throughout the final half of play with 10 shots. A late shot from sophomore Katie Hoots (Barrington, IL/Barrington) almost made it 3-0 Vassar, but the ball sailed wide left of the cage past the charging Colonial goalkeeper.
Senior goalie Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) made six stops in the net to earn her first shutout win of the season. Jillian Hernandez had a game-high eight saves for West Conn.
Vassar will be back in action this weekend at the Stevens Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ September 12-13. The Brewers will first face Stevens Tech on Saturday at 12:30 pm, before playing Whitman College the following day at 12:30 pm.
