Late Goal Secures 2OT Win for Stevens Over Vassar

HOBOKEN, NJ (September 12, 2015) – Zisi Komar scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play in double overtime, as the Stevens Institute of Technology edged Vassar 2-1 Saturday afternoon. The golden goal broke the tie after the teams had been knotted at one since the first half. Stevens jumps to 3-1 on the year with the win, while Vassar moves to 2-2.

The hosts struck first in the opening game of the Stevens Engineering Cup, getting an unassisted goal from Raba Nassif in the 13th minute. The Brewers would answer back towards the end of the first period, as freshman Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos) notched her second goal of the year off a feed from sophomore Jessica Schwed (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan). Despite being outshot 11-2 in the opening half, the Brewer defense held firm as the teams headed into the break even.

Neither side could produce much offense in the second half, with the Ducks managing just five shots to Vassar's three. Freshman Audrey Pillsbury (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach) fired the last shot of the half before time expired, but her attempt sailed high as the game went to OT.

Stevens pressured early and often in extra time producing six shots before netting the game-winner. Komar headed home a cross from Nassif in the 109th minute, handing the Brewers their second loss of the season.

Senior goalie Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) made a season-high nine saves in the contest, while Stevens keeper Lindsey Mahnken tallied two stops.

Vassar will have an opportunity to bounce back tomorrow when the team plays Whitman College at 12:30 pm in its final game of the Stevens Engineering Cup. Stevens will face NYU at 3:30 pm.
