BRISTOL, RI (September 5, 2015) – Vassar netted a pair of goals in each half, but could not come up with a game-winner in overtime as the team tied Salve Regina University 2-2 Saturday afternoon. The Brewers outshot the Seahawks 21-7 and held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks, but neither side could break the tie in OT as VC now moves to 1-0-1 on the season. Salve Regina stands at 0-2-1.
Vassar struck first in the opening game of the Roger Williams University/Squad Locker Classic at Bayside Field, as senior Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) netted his second goal of the year in the 33rd minute. The Brewers didn't lead for long, as Salve Regina's Issa Demirgioglu headed in a cross from Evan Dudney to even the game at one with less than three minutes to go in the first half.
The Seahawks scored again in the 55th minute, as sophomore Richie Finzio finished a shot off another Dudley assist to give his side a 2-1 advantage. Vassar continued to pressure, but couldn't find the net as time began winding down in the second half. A pair of back-to-back shots from senior Nick Hess (Troy, NY/Averill Park) and sophomore Reid Smith (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day School) were blocked in the 87th minute, before the Brewers finally broke through in the 88th.
Freshman Tyler Gilmore (Coronado, CA/Coronado) picked an opportune moment for his first collegiate goal, heading in the equalizer inside the 18-yard box with just 2:10 remaining. VC would manage two more shots before half, but the teams remained knotted at two heading into overtime.
Vassar produced three shots to Salve's two in the final 20 minutes of extra time, but neither squad could put one away. Seahawk goalkeeper Bryan McCormack finished with five saves on the afternoon, while senior Adam Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) made one stop for VC.
Vassar will be back in action tomorrow to face host Roger Williams University at 11:00 am.
