BRISTOL, NY (September 6, 2015) – Vassar tallied four scores in the second half, led by a game-high two goals from senior Tom Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) as the Brewers downed Roger Williams University 5-1 Sunday afternoon. The win wraps up the team's weekend at the Roger Williams/Squad Locker Classic, as the Brewers finish 1-0-1 after tying Salve Regina yesterday. VC now stands at 2-0-1 overall on the season, while Roger Williams suffers its first loss of the year to drop to 2-1.
The Brewers came out of the gate firing, as senior Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) put his team up early with a header goal at the 2:24 mark. VC held the one goal lead for the remainder of the half, outshooting the Hawks 8-5 while surrendering no corners to the hosts.
VC was again hot right off the bat in the second half, as senior Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) put away his first goal of the season off a feed from sophomore Noah Snider (Laramie, WY/Laramie) in the 47th minute. Roger Williams was able to respond, as James Sheldon cut the lead to one on a goal in the 62nd minute.
It was all Brewers from that point on, as Wiechert notched his first of the game in the 65th minute. Wiechert collected a rebound off a blocked shot, and powered a ball into the right corner to put his team back up by two. Freshman Tyler Gilmore (Coronado, CA/Coronado) notched his second score of the weekend in the 77th minute, burying a shot off a pair of one-timed passes from Palmer and Wiechert.
Wiechert rounded out the scoring for Vassar in the 87th minute, getting an assist from fellow senior Elias Kim (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) to push Vassar to the four-goal victory.
Vassar will be back in action this Wednesday, September 9 to play Manhattanville College on the road in Purchase, NY at 6:00 pm.
