POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 26, 2015) – The Vassar College field hockey team started Liberty League play Saturday afternoon with a statement, knocking off visiting St. Lawrence University 4-1 in action from Weinberg Field.
Vassar (7-2, 1-0 Liberty League) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring 2:16 into regulation thanks to a goal from freshman
Monica Feeley (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township), her second career tally. On the play, sophomore
Storm Sideleau (Contoocook, NH/Kimball Union Academy) took a shot which was blocked. The ensuing deflection landed next to senior
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker), who pushed the ball to Feeley for the score.
Just over nine minutes later in the match, Sideleau got on the board to double the Vassar lead on a very nice sequence. Freshman
Mikayla Young (Hackettstown, NJ/West Morris Central) made a nice run down the right sideline and sent the ball into the middle of the circle, where Sideleau smashed her shot into the left corner for the 2-0 lead at 11:31 of the contest.
Vassar had opportunities to increase the lead in the opening period, but the Brewers were denied on five more shot attempts by SLU keeper Kim Haab. After the halftime break, St. Lawrence (2-5, 1-0 Liberty) chalked up its first penalty corner, and scored on the play, as XiXi Halvorso-Phelan knocked in a deflected shot from Molly Wood for her first of the season.
Exactly four minutes later at 46:02, the Brewers regained their two goal lead, thanks to an unassisted goal from junior
Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams). Bracken took the ball off the stick stop on a corner, made two moves and hammered a 10-yard shot low into the left corner for her fourth goal of the year.
SLU tried to once again make its deficit one in the 50
th minute, but Vassar keeper
Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) stopped two chances by Kara Pelosi. The third shot by Pelosi was then turned away by sophomore defender
Ashley LaMere (Ballston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). The Brewers closed the scoring for the day at 64:41 of the game, as Wiebe posted her fourth goal of the year on an assist from Feeley.
Amico finished with three saves, while junior
Sophie Arnold (Merion, PA/Merion) added her Liberty League-leading fourth defensive save of the season. Vassar held a 12-2 edge in penalty corners, and outshot the Saints 22-8 on the afternoon. Kim Haab stopped 10 Vassar shots for the Saints.
The Brewers will return to non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Oneonta, NY at 4 p.m. for a tussle with Hartwick College.
