Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Penalty Corners Power Field Hockey Past Hartwick Wednesday

ONEONTA, NY (September 30, 2015) - The Vassar College field hockey team posted a school-record 26 penalty corners Wednesday afternoon, pulling away in the second half to defeat Hartwick College 4-2 in road non-conference play from Wright Stadium.

On a rainy and wet day, the Brewers (8-2) controlled the action for most of the game, hemming the Hawks (2-6) in their own zone for much of the game. Hartwick's defense was stout considering the volume of offensive pressure that Vassar exerted, as the Brewers penalty corner number broke the six-year record for corners, set back on September 12, 2019 at home against Elms College.

Vassar jumped out in front at the 25:58 mark of the first half, converting on its seventh corner of the game, as senior captain Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) posted her 27th career goal and fifth of the season. On the play, junior Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) sent a short pass across to Wiebe, who slid it past Hawk keeper Shannon Carter.

Hartwick evened the game just over five minutes later, using its first shot of the game to equalize the contest. HC's Courtney Coons fed Sarah Ryan in transition, and Ryan wound up and blasted a shot into the left corner of the cage.

After halftime, the two teams exchanged goals 52 seconds apart, as freshman Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored on a sprawling diving attempt to give VC a 2-1 lead. Hartwick wasted no time in evening the game, as Mikaelan Stulligross scored on a rebound to pull the Hawks to level standing.

The goal barrage didn't end there though, as Vassar tallied 2:10 after their previous goal on a penalty corner play from the top of the circle. Freshman Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) fired a shot after the stick stop, and Beach deflected it past Carter to put the Brewers back on top by one.

Vassar doubled its lead with an insurance goal with 1:46 to play in regulation, again coming off of a corner play. Freshman Monica Feeley (Harrisburg, PA/Montville Township) fired an attempt that was saved, but fellow newcomer Mikayla Young (Hackettstown, NJ/West Morris Central) was there for the Brewers to slot home the rebound for her second career score.

The four goals marked the fourth time this year Vassar College has netted four or more tallies in a game, which was the first time since 2006 that has happened. The Brewers outshot their hosts for the game 29-3, while surrendering just two corners to the Hawks. Carter made 15 saves for Hartwick.

The Brewers will return to Weinberg Field Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a huge Liberty League test against No. 5 William Smith College.
