MONTCLAIR, NJ (September 23, 2015) – Montclair State's Kailey Delgauer scored twice and Amber Haslett added another as the Vassar College field hockey team dropped in a non-conference tussle to No. 8 Montclair State University Wednesday evening at Sprague Field.
The Brewers (6-2) played evenly with the Red Hawks in the statistical categories, but it was the play of the hosts on penalty corners which proved to be the difference. Vassar finishes its regular season trips to New Jersey with a 1-2 record, with VC's only other loss coming to another New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) team in Kean University (1-0).
The Red Hawks (7-1) wasted no time getting on the board, as Delgauer opening the scoring with help from Haslett off of the game's first penalty corner at 2:14 of the contest. Vassar had the game's next two chances on a penalty corner of its own in the 10
th minute, but shots from junior
Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) and freshman
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) were both saved.
Minutes later, the Red Hawks doubled their lead as Haslett dribbled into the circle and followed her first shot that hit the post with another that found the back of the cage for her second goal of the year. In the 29
th minute, MSU nearly made the score 3-0, but Vassar freshman keeper
Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) made four straight saves from point blank range to keep the VC deficit at just two.
The Brewers came down after that sequence, and nearly cut the MSU lead in half, but an attempt from senior
Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) was just wide of the mark. It looked like the Brewers would enter halftime down two, but Dalgauer converted another penalty corner on an assist from Kelly Kramer with 15 seconds left in the half to make the score 3-0.
From that point on, the teams played a back and forth game in the second half, as Vassar held a 6-4 shot edge in the stanza. At the 40:24 mark of the game, VC had another chance on a penalty corner, but Zarrella was once again denied a goal by MSU's Rebecca Brattole. Minutes later, Vassar freshman defender
Haley Cubell (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) kept the game at 3-0, making a defensive save on a shot by Haslett.
After a Vassar timeout with 14 minutes to play, the Brewers dominated possession and had a late chance to get on the board, but Red Hawk reserve net minder Kaitlin Maguire made three saves on sophomore
Storm Sideleau (Contoocook, NH/Kimball Union Academy) to earn the shutout for MSU.
The Brewers held a slight 7-6 edge on penalty corners for the game, but were outshot by their hosts 13-10 on the evening. Amico finished with eight saves, a career-high for the freshman, while the two Red Hawk keepers stopped seven shots combined.
Vassar will open its Liberty League schedule this Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on Weinberg Field, hosting the Saints of St. Lawrence University (2-4, 0-0 Liberty League).
