Brewers Clinch Third Straight Shutout vs. New Paltz, 2-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 22, 2015) – Vassar netted a pair of goals less than two minutes apart early in the second half as the squad went on to shutout SUNY-New Paltz 2-0 Tuesday afternoon. It was the third straight shutout victory for the Brewers, as the team has not conceded a goal since September 12 and moves to 5-2 on the season. New Paltz drops to 1-7 with the loss.

One again, the class of 2019 provided the scoring for VC as freshmen Audrey Pillsbury (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach) and Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos) buried a pair of shots in the 2-0 win. Senior goalkeeper Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) took care of business in the net making seven saves for her third solo shutout of the season.

Vassar had several chances to break into the scoring column in the first half, outshooting the Hawks 18-2. New Paltz keeper Mary Flanagan kept her side in the game however, making four saves to keep both squads scoreless at the break.

The Brewers quickly capitalized at the start of the second period of play, after a series of passes gave junior Emily Krebs (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) an opening down the left wing. She played a ball into the box, which sophomore Amanda McFarland (Redwood City, CA/Menlo) played off her foot with a brilliant back heel. The one touch pass went directly to a waiting Pillsbury on the right side of the key, and the first year striker buried her shot into the right corner to put VC ahead 1-0 in the 47th minute.

Less than two minutes later, junior Kelsey Hamm (Wilmington, NC/John. T Hoggard) played a long arcing ball down the left end of the pitch to find Andrews all alone. Andrews put the ball high over the head of the charging keeper and into the net to quickly give Vassar a two-goal advantage.

After scoring two goals on their first three shots of the second half, the Brewers weren't as fortunate down the stretch unable to connect on their final 12 attempts at goal. New Paltz managed seven shots in the second period, but never really threatened as the Vassar defensive unit limited the Hawks to ambitious looks from outside the 18-yard box.

Vassar will return to game action this Saturday, September 26 when the team hosts the No. 25 team in the country, Montclair State. Kickoff at Gordon Field is slated for 2:00 pm.

Notes:

Emma Nichols is now tied for fifth with Emily Spencer ('99) in career wins at Vassar, earning the 17th of her career today. Her now-11 career shutouts is tied for third on the all-time list with Lauren Kelly (99-00) and Spencer. She will set the all-time Vassar record with two more shutouts this season.
