Miller Leads Vassar To Liberty League Split Saturday Afternoon



SCHENECTADY, NY (September 19, 2015) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team finished its opening weekend in Liberty League play Saturday afternoon, falling to  No. 18 Clarkson University in three games before returning the favor to Skidmore College later in the day. The Brewers moved to 6-6 on the season, closing the weekend with a 2-2 Liberty League mark.

Despite a match-best 16 kills from junior Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon), the Brewers were unable to match No. 18 Clarkson's .321 hitting, dropping a 25-19, 25-12 and 26-24 match to the Golden Knights (11-3, 4-0 Liberty League).

In the opening set, the Brewers led 9-7 after a 4-0 stretch that ended with a kill by sophomore Bria Corham (Kansas City, MO/Montville Township). The Golden Knights pushed back ahead, taking a 17-12 advantage after a kill by Danielle Farabee. VC cut the CU lead to four at 23-19, but back-to-back kills Lauren Hutchinson and Victoria Kirkemo sealed the set for CU.

The second game saw the Golden Knights lead for the majority of the set, as they hit .440 for the game, taking a 2-0 lead. The third game was tight the entire way, as Vassar took a four-point edge at 20-16 after another kill by Corham. Clarkson would creep back into the set, and with Vassar holding set point at 24-22, the Golden Knights tallied a 4-0 run to earn the match victory.

Miller had another stellar match for the Brewers, finishing with 16 kills for the second time in two days. The junior captain earned her kill total on 43 attacks, posting seven digs as well. Sophomore Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) dished out 24 assists to go with three digs and two blocks, while Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) posted a team-best 13 digs.

Vassar finished with a .198 (30-11-96) hitting percentage on the match, as the Brewers committed a season-low 11 errors on the match. CU was led by the 15 kills from Aishvina Arasu, and Farabee also added 10 kills to lead the Golden Knights.

The Brewers ended the weekend in the Capital region with a big three-set win over Skidmore College, as VC chalked its second-most kills in a three-set match this year with 36. Miller was on again for the Brewers, as she swung at a .474 clip in the win over Skidmore, powering down 10 kills. VC earned the win with scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-13.

In the first set, Skidmore (3-9, 1-2 Liberty League) led 18-17, but the Brewers forged ahead with an 8-2 run to close the set. During the run, freshman Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) totaled three kills.

A balanced attack in the second set saw the Brewers post 10 kills, with Gallagher and Miller each posting three as VC rolled the a 2-0 match lead. The third game was all Vassar, holding Skidmore to just four finishes while posting 14 kills of its own in earning a big three-set win.

Gallagher chalked a match-best 11 terminations, while Miller totaled five digs and two aces to go with her kill total. Corham added five kills in the win for VC, and sophomore Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) added five kills and a match-high six blocks. Hallum posted a match-high 13 digs, and Lauren Ninkovich (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) added 10 digs. Tiajoloff finished with 22 assists, seven digs and two blocks as well for the Brewers in the win.

The Brewers (6-6, 2-2 Liberty League) will be back in action this Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., traveling to New York City for a non-conference match with Hunter College.
