NEW YORK (September 23, 2015) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team used a late rally in the first set to steal game one, using that momentum to sweep host Hunter College Wednesday evening in non-conference play from the Hunter Sportsplex. VC earned the win thanks to scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-16.
The Brewers (7-6) trailed for much of the first half, forcing head coach
Jonathan Penn into a timeout at 8-3. Back in the game, VC pulled even at 10, but six consecutive points by the Hawks (4-5) pushed their lead back out to six. VC trimmed the lead slightly, but still trailed by five at 22-17 after an ace by Breanna Banske of Hunter.
Vassar stayed the course, and rattled off the final six points of the opening set to take a hard-fought 25-23. From that point on, the momentum seemed to stay on the side of the Brewers. The second set saw VC continually build its lead through the game, leading by eight points on a pair of occasions. Freshman
Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) posted five kills in the game to lead the Brewers.
In the final set, the Brewers chalked up eight of their 15 service aces in the match, led by the four from sophomore
Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) in rolling to the straight set victory for Vassar. Gallagher finished with a match-best 12 kills for the Brewers, hitting .423 for the match. Sophomore
Bria Corham (Kansas City, MO/Montville Township) added eight kills, four blocks and three aces as well in the win.
Junior captain
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) accumulated six kills and six digs, and Sams completed the match with four kills and a career-high five aces. Sophomore
Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) dished out 23 assists to go with six digs, and senior libero
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) added a match-best 17 digs.
The back row defense was strong, as junior
Sierra Tobin (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) also posted two aces and 11 digs. The Brewers posted an offensive hitting attack of 32 kills and a .164 hitting percentage, while the 15 aces were the second-most this season, bested only by the 16 against Lehman College September 5.
The Brewers are off for nine days before heading to Rochester Institute of Technology next Friday for a Liberty League doubleheader. VC takes on St. Lawrence University at 6 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. match with Bard College.
