Vassar Field Hockey Blanks Ramapo Saturday, 2-0

MAHWAH, NJ (September 19, 2015) – Freshman Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) set up both Vassar College goals Saturday, as the Brewer field hockey team blanked host Ramapo College 2-0 in non-conference play from the Athletic Center Turf Field.

Vassar (6-1) controlled the tempo all game, holding Ramapo to no shots for the contest while picking up 19 of the contest's 20 penalty corners. The Brewers opened the scoring 29:24 into the contest, as junior Lauren Shumate (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) tallied her first career goal. On the play, Shumate converted a penalty corner with help from Caveny.

The Brewers doubled their lead just under five minutes later, taking advantage of back-to-back penalty corners. On the second attempt, junior Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) inserted and then was the one to knock in the goal as Caveny posted her team-best fifth assist on the season. Wiebe's goal was her third of the season, and her 25th career score for the Brewers.

After the break, the Brewers kept the pressure on the Roadrunners (1-5), but Ramapo's Emily Wisneski stopped all eight attempts on goal to keep the score 2-0. That was all that Vassar would need, as it cruised to its fourth shutout of the season. The four clean sheets are the third-most in a season ever at Vassar College, as the record sits at six set last season.

Wiebe fired the most shots on the contest, as all four of her attempts came on net while Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) also posted four shots. Caveny's two helpers marked the second time a Vassar player has chalked up a pair of assists, as fellow newcomer Monica Feeley (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) accomplished that feat in the 6-0 season opening win over Manhattanville.

The Brewers will return to action on Wednesday evening, again heading to New Jersey for a big non-conference match-up with No. 11 Montclair State University (6-1) on Sprague Field.
