Early Goals Not Enough as Brewers Drop to Stevens, 4-2

POUGHKEEPSIE , NY (September 16, 2015) – Despite two first half goals from senior Cosmo Veneziale (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and twice holding a lead, Vassar came up short to the Stevens Institute of Technology 4-2 Wednesday afternoon. The Ducks were paced by two goals from senior Matteo Sturla, including the game-winner as Stevens jumps to 4-1 on the year. Vassar moves to 2-2-2.

After surviving a flurry of early shots from the Ducks, it was Vassar that struck first in the game at Gordon Field. Senior Tom Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) found an open seam down the right side and played a cross into the box. The ball deflected off the Ducks keeper and onto the foot of Veneziale. He finished easily on the open net, and Vassar controlled an early 1-0 lead in the 4th minute.

Stevens answered back not long after, as senior Carson Pryor netted his first of the game off a feed from sophomore Tommy Dorsay in the 10th minute. With the game tied at one, Veneziale again found the goal for the Brewers after forcing a turnover deep in the defensive third of Stevens. He found himself one-on-one with the goalie, and finished to the left of the cage to pull VC back ahead 2-1 at the 20:16 mark.

Stevens continued to pressure, and found the equalizer towards the end of the half after taking control of a ball down the right sideline. A series of quick passes gave Sturla an open look at the goal, and he finished easily to tie the game. The teams would remain locked at two heading into the half, with the Brewers holding a slim 10-9 edge in shots.

Stevens put away the eventual game-winner shorty into the second period, after senior Joe Cellitti played a cross into the middle. Sturla was there again to finish for the Ducks, heading a ball into the upper left corner of the cage.

The Brewers began to threaten down the stretch of the half, but the Stevens defense remained firm clearing away crosses and preventing any easy scoring chances. Pryor put away one last goal for the Ducks in the final seconds of regulation.

Vassar will return to competition this Saturday, September 19 when the team travels across the river to play Hudson Valley rival SUNY-New Paltz.
