HOBOKEN, NJ (September 13, 2015) – Sophomore Amanda McFarland (Redwood City, CA/Melno) scored the game-winning goal to break the tie in overtime, as Vassar topped Whitman College 1-0 Sunday afternoon. It was the third overtime contest for the Brewers in the past four games, and VC came out ahead to pick up its third victory of the season. Whitman drops to 0-4 with the loss.
After neither side could produce a goal in 90 minutes of regulation, Vassar found itself back in overtime for the second consecutive game at the Stevens Engineering Cup. The Brewers quickly had an opportunity in the 92nd minute, as McFarland set up for a corner kick. Her cross was deflected into the net, giving her side its second sudden death win of the season.
Senior Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) earned the shutout in the cage for Vassar, making a game-high eight saves. Whitman keeper Haley Case made six stops on the afternoon for the Missionaries. VC outshot Whitman 14-12 in the contest, while holding a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Vassar will return to Gordon Field for a three-game home stand next week, starting with a matchup vs. Manhattanville College on September 19, 2015. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
