Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Wiebe Nets Two As Field Hockey Blanks Brockport, 5-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 12, 2015) – Vassar College field hockey senior captain Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) netted her first two goals of the season as the Brewers breezed past visiting College at Brockport 5-0 in non-conference action from Weinberg Field Saturday afternoon.

The Brewers (4-1) came out of the gates strong, peppering Brockport (0-4) keeper Paula Amo with 10 shots over the first 20 minutes of the contest. Vassar College got on the board at 20:39 of the contest, as freshmen Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) controlled a pass from Lauren Shumate (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) five yards in front of cage, and ripped a shot to the keeper's right for the goal.

Just 35 seconds later, the Brewers doubled their lead on an incredible finish by sophomore Flora Crichton-Stuart (New York, NY/St. Mary's). Senior Haley Merritt (Northport, NY/Northport) started the play with a steal, feeding freshman Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) near the end line. More tossed a cross into the middle, which was deflected by Caveny, and at chest level Crichton-Stuart batted the ball out of the air for the tally.

Brockport responded with its best flurry of the contest right before the intermission, as Margo Tremaine and Christina Conkling had chances for the Golden Eagles. Vassar College freshman keeper Paige Amico (Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) denied both attempts to keep the Brewers ahead by two going into the intermission.

VC quickly added to its lead just 2:12 into the second half, as freshman Monica Feeley (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) scored her first of the season on a deflection of a Caveny drive off a penalty corner.

Later in the second half, Wiebe netted her first of the season at 45:19 of the game, tipping in a shot from junior Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams). Wiebe inserted on the play and ran to the left post, where her deflection trickled into the corner of the cage. On the score, Wiebe moved into a tie with Tina Caso '14 for fourth all-time in points at Vassar with 49.

Vassar College continued to pressure the visiting Golden Eagles over the next 10 minutes, until lightning and heavy rains forced both teams off the field for 48 minutes. Once play resumed, VC finished the scoring on the afternoon, as Feeley fed Wiebe for another strike at 58:23 of the contest. Wiebe's goal was her 24th career tally, pulling to within one of Chapel Love '98 for third all-time in goals.

The hosting Brewers outshot Brockport on the afternoon 27-2, while earning all 12 penalty corners awarded on the contest. Amo made 12 stops in the cage for the Golden Eagles, playing 48:25 of the game before handing keeping duties off to Sarah Beam. Caveny led the Brewers with six shots, while Wiebe chalked a game-high four attempts on cage. Vassar also extended its home win streak to 12 games, which is the fourth longest current home win streak in NCAA field hockey.

The Brewers will look to continue its solid play at home Wednesday, hosting Western Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. on Weinberg Field.
