Women’s Volleyball Falls Twice At Golden Flyer Invitational Friday

| Box Score 2

ROCHESTER, NY (September 11, 2015) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team headed to Nazareth College this weekend for the Golden Flyer Invitational, playing in day one Friday night. The Brewers were unable to secure a win though, falling in four sets to Medaille College before dropping a match to The College at Brockport in three sets.

Medaille 3, Vassar 1
The Brewers started the match off strong against Medaille (2-1), earning the first set 25-21, but couldn't hold off the Mavericks in falling in four sets with scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-19.

The Brewers jumped out on top thanks to a whopping nine kills in the opening stanza by junior Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon). In that period, VC trailed by as many as four points at 9-5, but rallied to tie the set on three finishes and a block by Miller. After five tie scores, the last coming at 19-19, VC was able to tack on eight of the final 10 points to secure a 1-0 match edge.

With Medaille keying on Miller, Brewer sophomore Bria Corham (Kansas City, MO/Montville Township) came alive in the second game. Corham chalked up six terminations on nine attacks, but Vassar fell behind early 9-2. VC responded with a 9-1 spurt, capped by a kill by Corham to tied the set at 10.

Medaille again regained a four-point edge at 19-15, but once more Vassar showed its resilience by pulling even at 19-all on the strength of four consecutive points, the last coming on a service ace by Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO/Coronado). The teams exchanged three-point runs to make the score 22-22, but the Mavericks earned the set win to pull the match even at one.

The third set was once again a nail biter, as the period featured 16 tie scores and seven lead changes. The Brewers held the game's largest lead at 13-9, but the Mavericks battled back and with the score deadlocked at 23, MC chalked up a kill by Marlena Clotfelter and forced an attack error to take a 2-1 contest lead.

In the final set of the match, Vassar at one point led 14-11 after a 7-2 run, but the Mavericks used a 7-0 stretch of their own to pull ahead 18-14. Medaille held its lead for the remainder of the match to earn its second win of the evening.

VC was paced by the 14 total terminations from Miller, as she added four digs and two aces. Corham chalked up a season-high 12 kills on 25 attacks, hitting at a .320 percentage, and freshman Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) registered 11 kills. Sophomore Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) also added six kills for VC, and MacMillan chalked up her first career double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs.

Freshman Lauren Ninkovich (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) finished with a team-high 14 digs for the Brewers, and passed well as four of her nine serve receptions turned into kills for the Brewers. Senior libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) had 13 digs as well for VC, which hit .115 (45-29-139) for the match.

Brockport 3, Vassar 0
The Golden Eagles of Brockport hit at a .407 clip for the match, improving each set as the Brewers dropped their second match of the day with scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-5. Vassar College moved to 3-3 on the season after the loss to Friday evening.

The offensive firepower for Brockport was the story, as the Golden Eagles finished with 41 kills on just 81 swings. In the third set, the Golden Eagles chalked up 13 kills on 20 total attempts, hitting at a .650 percentage to earn the win.

Corham chalked up eight kills for Vassar College, while Gallagher added six terminations as well. Junior Sierra Tobin and Miller each had seven digs to pace the Brewers in that category, and MacMillan posted a team-best 18 assists. VC posted 22 kills for the match, but suffered from 15 receiving errors as well in the loss.
