Women’s Volleyball Splits Final Day At Golden Flyer Invitational



ROCHESTER, NY (September 12, 2015) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Golden Flyer Invitational Saturday afternoon, hosted by Nazareth College. Vassar knocked off Hartwick College in three sets, while dropping its final contest of the day to the host Golden Flyers in four games.

The Brewers opened Saturday's action with a straight victory over Hartwick, earning the victory wth scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-15. Vassar's defense was stout all match long, holding the Hawk offense to -.058 hitting on the match while forcing 20 attack errors.

VC trailed during the first set until the midway point, when VC turned a 15-11 deficit into a 25-17 win, going on a 14-2 run to end the game. During that run, the Brewers posted three service aces and received four kills from sophomore Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills).

The second stanza saw the Brewers take a 2-0 match lead, thanks to a 9-2 run midway through the period. In the final set, the Brewers scored 18 of the first 23 points to claim the match and run their record to 4-3 on the season.

Sams posted a match-best nine kills to pace the Brewers, hitting .389 (9-2-18) over the three sets, while adding five digs. Junior Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) added seven kills, six digs, and two total blocks, and sophomore Bria Corham (Kansas City, MO/Montville Township) chalked up five kills, two service aces, and five digs.

Freshman Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) chalked up five terminations, and freshman Lauren Ninkovich (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) had six of the Brewers' 11 service aces. Fellow freshman Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO/Coronado) added 27 assists on her 32 set attempts, as the Brewers hit .133 for the match.

The Brewers dropped the first two sets to Nazareth in the final game of the tournament, but rallied to take the third set with a decisive 25-13 win. In the end though, the Golden Flyers were able to capture the fourth set and earn the victory with scores of 25-16, 25-18, 13-25 and 25-20.

In the opening game, the Golden Flyers (5-2) led for the entirety of the set, hitting .237 in the stanza to take an early lead. Nazareth doubled its lead to 2-0 in the second period thanks to a 10-3 run midway through the game.

The third set was all Vassar though, as the Brewers hit .455 for the period, erring on only one of their 22 attacks to earn an emphatic 25-13 game win. In the final set, Vassar and Naz battled back and forth, with the last tie of the match coming at 9-9. Nazareth scored the next seven points, capped by a kill by Celia Cordero, to take a 16-9 edge. VC pulled to within one at 20-19 after an ace by Miller, but the Golden Flyers posted four consecutive points to pull away for the victory.

Miller posted 11 kills and three aces to lead the way for the Brewers, adding six digs, and senior Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) registered a match-best and season-high 24 digs. Gallagher was efficient offensively, hitting at a solid .303 clip after posting 10 terminations and three assisted blocks. MacMillan and sophomore Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) combined for 30 assists.

The Brewers (4-4) are off for six days before opening Liberty League action in Saratoga Springs, NY, taking on Union College (7-0) and St. Lawrence University (2-7) at Skidmore College Friday, September 18 at 6 p.m.
