ITHACA, NY (May 2, 2015) – Vassar was dominant in doubles, winning all three matches by at least three games as the Brewers took down St. Lawrence University 5-1 in the Liberty League semifinals Saturday afternoon. VC improves to 14-5 on the season with the win, while St. Lawrence ends the year 15-7.
The Brewers will square off against top-seeded Skidmore College in the Liberty League Championship tomorrow. The Thoroughbreds topped RPI 5-0 in the day's other semifinal. Skidmore and Vassar will meet in the conference title match for the ninth consecutive year.
Doubles proved to be crucial once again for the Brewers, as the team swept two-on-two play against the Saints for the second consecutive week. Seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) notched the first win of the day for Vassar, topping Elkie Vandenbeemt and Morgan McNeal 8-4 at No. 1.
Sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) and junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) were next to win at No. 2, defeating Anna Young and Emily Wyman 8-4. Sophomores Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) and Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) completed the sweep for VC, winning 8-5 at No. 3 over Samantha Miller and Georgia Comber.
Schapiro quickly gave the Brewers a 4-0 edge with a win at No. 3 singles, blanking Morgan McNeal 6-0, 6-0. The Saints were able to pick up one victory at No. 5 singles, as Georgia Comber earned a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Yeates.
Hallewell had the clincher for Vassar, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Emily Wyman at No. 5 to seal the 5-1 win.
Vassar will face Skidmore tomorrow at 10:00 am at the Reis Tennis Center for the Liberty League Title.
