POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2015) – Vassar earned all three doubles victories, then rattled off six singles wins to sweep the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 9-0 Friday evening. The win moves Vassar to 6-4 in dual matches on the season and 3-1 in the Liberty League, while RPI drops to 6-5 (2-2 LL) with the loss.
Despite rain moving the match indoors to Walker Field House, the teams got underway with doubles where VC quickly jumped ahead. Seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) went up 5-3 in the No. 1 match, before winning three of the last four games to clinch their fourth straight win as a pair.
Sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) and junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) raced out to a 3-0 advantage at No. 2, before RPI pulled within one making it 5-4 in favor of VC. The pairs traded games, then Hallewell and Yeates won the final two to seal the 8-5 victory. Freshmen Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) and Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) took care of business in the No. 3 match, winning 8-4 to give VC a 3-0 edge heading into doubles.
Sadeghi was the first to win at singles, besting Emily Laurilliard 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 match to put her side up 4-0. Fitzgerald clinched the match at No. 5, downing Pooja Ganesh 6-0, 6-3. Christensen, Hallewell, Yeates and sophomore Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) all poured on two-set victories to give Vassar the perfect finish.
The Brewers will be back at it tomorrow to face William Smith College in Geneva, NY at 12:00 pm.
