Senior Day A Success As Brewer Women's Tennis Bounces SLU, 8-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 26, 2015) -- The No. 22 Vassar College women's tennis team concluded their 2014-15 home slate Saturday, celebrating Senior Day with an 8-1 defeat of No. 37 St. Lawrence University in action from Joss Courts.

The squad celebrated two of the best tennis players to play with the program, as All-Americans Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) and Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) were honored after the match by teammates and coaches.

Prior to the postgame celebration, the two seniors had plenty to rave about on the court, as the Brewers earned a quick 3-0 lead in the match thanks to a sweep of the three doubles matches. The dynamic senior tandem of Sadeghi and Schapiro dispatched of their opponents at No. 1 with a score of 8-3, while sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) and junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) had no issues at No. 2 doubles, taking an 8-5 decision.

In the final doubles match of the afternoon, sophomores Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) and Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) edged out Samantha Miller and Georgia Comber 9-7 to need just two singles wins to earn the win.

In singles play, freshman No. 1 Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) earned her lone win of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Sadeghi knocked off Olivia Arroyo at No. 2 with the exact same line score as Christensen, and Schapiro capped her day with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3.

Hallewell completed her double with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Emily Wyman at No. 4, and Becker chalked her second victory of the day with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles. SLU's lone win of the day came at No. 5, as Comber knocked off Yeates 6-3, 7-6 (3). With the win, the Brewers moved to 13-5 and 6-1 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence dropped to 13-6 and 5-2 in the conference.
