POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 19, 2015) - The Vassar women's tennis team wrapped up the weekend against the Rochester Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon, sweeping the Tigers 9-0 to move to 5-1 in the Liberty League. The win guarantees the Brewers at least a top three seed in the Liberty League Championships, held in Ithaca, NY May 2-3. VC is now 12-5 overall on the season, while RIT drops to 4-10 (2-5 Liberty).
Seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) made quick work of Sara Bjork and Gianna Heaviland at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-0 to put VC up early.
Sophomores Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) and Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) were next to win, topping Marie Jubert and Paige Baker 8-1. Sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) and junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) gave VC a 3-0 edge at No. 2 doubles, besting Riane Reithel and Diane Wang 8-3.
The Brewers carried that momentum right into singles, winning all six bouts to secure the perfect 9-0 victory. Junior Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) picked up her first Liberty League win of the spring at No. 5, downing Riane Reithel 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) remained perfect in conference play (5-0), winning 6-1, 6-2 over Sara Bjork in the No. 1 match. Hallewell, Becker, freshman Courtney Geiss (Charleston, SC/Laurel Springs School) and freshman Dasha Ivenitsky (South Salem, NY/John Jay) all earned singles victories to close out the match.
Vassar will end the regular season on Saturday, April 25 against St. Lawrence University at 2 pm. The Brewers women tennis team will honors its two seniors, Samantha Schapiro and Ava Sadeghi for senior day.
