No. 22 Vassar Downs Bryn Mawr, Wellesley for Seven Sisters Title

NORTHAMPTION, MA (April 12, 2015) - No. 22 Vassar defeated Bryn Mawr College and No. 30 Wellesley College in a pair of dual matches to finish the weekend 4-0 to claim its 12th Seven Sisters Championship Sunday afternoon. The Brewers were dominant in the tournament, losing just one match and four total sets the entire weekend en route to the Championship. Vassar improves to 11-4 overall in dual matches with the wins.

Freshmen Kate Christensen and Morgan Fitzgerald along with sophomore Hanna McGuire were named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament team.

The Brewers started off the day against Bryn Mawr, sweeping both singles and doubles in straight sets to claim a 5-0 victory.

Freshman Courtney Geiss (Charleston, SC/Laurel Springs School) was victorious at No. 1 singles, downing Lizzie Siegle 6-2, 6-2. Junior Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) cruised past Molly MacDougall 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, while freshman Dasha Ivenitsky (South Salem, NY/John Jay) earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jennifer Laske at No. 3.

The Brewers took care of business in doubles, as junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) and freshman Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) bested Melina Koukoutchos and Kendall Baller at No. 1 6-1, 6-0. Sophomores Shayna Becker Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) and Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) finished things off at No. 2 defeating Eram Haider and Tirsa Delate 6-0, 6-2.

With Vassar and Wellesley both entering the final match undefeated, the head-to-head bout of nationally ranked teams served as the title match for the Seven Sisters Championship. The Brewers rose to the challenge, edging the Blue 4-1 with two doubles victories and two singles wins.

Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) grinded out a win at No. 1 singles, topping the 21st ranked player in the Northeast Sojung Lee in three sets. After dropping the first 2-6, Christensen battled back to secure 6-4, 6-3 victories in the second and third sets to clinch the win. Senior Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) rattled off another win at No. 2 singles over Carina Chen 6-3, 6-1.

Shayna Becker and senior Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) bested Dasha Kostikina and Samantha Stone in another three set marathon. After going up in the first after a 7-5 win, the Wellesley pair pulled even with a 6-3 win in the second. Becker and Schapiro earned a 6-2 set three victory to come out on top. Fitzgerald and McGuire picked up the remaining victory for Vassar at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-0 vs. C. Dickensheets and Caroline Hsu.

Vassar will return to the courts to play its final non-conference match of the regular season against MIT on Saturday, April 18.
