SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (March 7, 2015) – No. 20 Skidmore earned two of three doubles victories, then clinched four more wins in singles to earn a 6-3 decision over No. 30 Vassar Saturday afternoon. The Brewers move to 2-2 on the year in head-to-head competition, while Skidmore improves to 5-3 on the season in duals.
"I'm proud of the way we competed today," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "We played with a lot of pride and composure, and Skidmore played very well. We're in a good place continuing to get better with every match we play, so I'm looking forward to the upcoming weeks."
Seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) picked up their 13th victory as a pair, defeating Zoe Valella and Yumi Karlshoei at No. 1 doubles 8-1. The pairs played a very long first game, before Schapiro and Sadeghi pulled out the win and set the tone for the seven-point victory.
The Thoroughbreds were able to pull out victories in the bottom two matches, as Michelle Fuca and Caroline Finnegan downed sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Scared Heart) and junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) 8-2 in the No. 2 match. An 8-5 win for Brianna Greene and Alexa Goldberg over sophomores Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) and Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/ Mira Costa) gave the hosts a 2-1 edge heading into singles.
Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) remained undefeated in dual matches at No. 1 singles, beating Valella 7-5, 6-2 to claim her 13th singles victory on the season. Hallewell also picked up a win in the No. 4 bout, coming from behind to defeat Skidmore's Erica Meno 3-6, 6-4 6-4 in three sets. The Thoroughbreds clinched the team victory with wins at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6.
VC will be back in action during the team's spring break trip to Southern California next week, first facing the University of La Verne on Monday, March 16.
