What to Look For Skidmore and Vassar have combined for the last eight Liberty League titles dating back to 2007, so both sides know the importance of Saturday's meeting for postseason tournament seeding. Vassar was selected as the unanimous Liberty League preseason favorite in women's tennis, with four-time defending Liberty League champion Skidmore placing second. Skidmore will look to bounce back after dropping three straight matches at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
A Look at the Thoroughbreds Skidmore comes into Saturday's match 4-3 on the year, fresh off a trip to Greencastle, IN where the team competed in the ITA National Indoor Championships this past weekend. The 17th ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team opened play at the event with an 8-1 loss to third ranked Washington University on February 27; their first loss of the season. The Thoroughbreds went on to a 4-5 defeat to Washington and Lee University in the consolation round on February 28, before falling to Depauw University 3-6 on March 1.
ITA RankingsThe Vassar women's tennis team remained the 30th team in the country in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III National Rankings released by the organization's offices this week. This week's rankings were the first of the spring season, as many teams have resumed competition over the past month. VC finished the fall tabbed as the No. 30 team in the country, and also retained its No. 12 regionally.
NYS Championship Repeat? Vassar will look to build off of its success the last time the teams played October 13 when the Brewers earned five of six victories against Skidmore in the finals of their brackets at the New York State Championships. Seniors
Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) and
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) led the way for the Brewers, as the duo finished 9-0 overall on the weekend. Sadeghi earned a comeback victory over Skidmore's Madie Benn 6-7, (5-7), 6-3, 10-7 to take the No. 1 singles bracket, while Schapiro notched a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Skidmore's Brianna Greene in the No. 2 singles championship. The pair also cruised through the No. 1 doubles bracket, winning the championship over Benn and Zoe Valella of Skidmore 8-3 Sunday.
Last Meeting The last time the two squads met in dual meet format was on April 28, 2014 when VC fell 5-1 in the Liberty League Championships to No. 14 nationally ranked Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds also earned a 7-2 win over Vassar during the regular season that year on March 1, 2014.
Coming up Next:Vassar will head west for a five-game dual match series in sunny California during spring break, first facing the University of La Verne (6-0) on March 16.
