IRVINE, CA (March 20, 2015) – No. 4 Amherst College swept singles and earned two doubles victories to secure an 8-1 dual match victory over No. 30 Vassar Friday afternoon. The Jeffs improve to 4-1 on the year with their fourth straight win, while VC now stands at 4-4.
Seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) earned the lone victory for Vassar on the day, continuing their hot streak at No. 1 doubles for the Brewers. The VC duo topped Vickie Ip and Sue Ghosh 8-6, and have now won eight of their past 10 matches as a pair.
The Jeffs claimed 8-2 wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to carry a 2-1 advantage into singles action.
The Brewers played several close matches in singles competition, highlighted by a three-set battle between sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) and Amherst's Simone Aisiks at No. 3. Hallewell was ahead early, earning a 6-3 victory in the first set, but Aiskis came back in the second grinding out a 7-6 win. Aiskis clinched the match victory in the super tiebreak, winning 10-2.
Freshman Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) came close to earning a set off Sarah Monteagudo at No. 5, but fell just short in the tiebreak as the Amherst junior came out ahead 6-2, 7-6.
The Brewers will wrap up their spring break trip tomorrow morning against No. 32 Chapman University in Orange, CA.
