IRVINE, CA (March 19, 2015) – No. 30 Vassar won two of three at doubles, then earned wins in matches 1-4 in singles play to seal a 6-3 win over 29th ranked Whitman College Thursday afternoon. The victory is the second win over a ranked team for the Brewers during their spring trip in Southern California, as the team now stands at 4-3 in dual matches on the season. Whitman drops to 9-3 in duals on the year with the loss.
Seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) picked up their 15th victory as a pair on the year, downing twin sisters Courtney and Morgan Lawless at No. 1 doubles 8-4. Sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) and junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) also earned a win for VC at No. 2 doubles, besting Erin Bell and Katrina Allick 8-3. Despite a victory at No. 3 doubles for the Missionaries, Vassar carried a 2-1 edge into singles action.
Schapiro was the first to finish for the Brewers at No. 3 singles, topping Morgan Lawless 6-1, 6-2 to put the Brewers ahead 3-1. Whitman got back within one, as Lindsey Brodeck finished off freshman Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) 6-3, 7-5 to make it 3-2.
Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) picked up another win for VC next, beating Courtney Lawless 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) in the No. 1 bout. Hallewell then clinched the match for the Brewers at No. 4, defeating Allie Wallin 6-4, 4-6, 3-1 to give Vassar the decisive fifth victory. Sadeghi notched the final win for VC on the day, earning a three set (6-3, 4-6, 6-0) win over Jenna Dobrin at No. 2.
VC will be back in action to face No. 4 Amherst College tomorrow at 10:00 am in Irvine, CA.
