WEST POINT, NY (February 14, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team opened up its 2015 spring season at the United States Military Academy Saturday. Army swept the doubles matches, and took five of six singles bouts to earn the 6-1 (Division I scoring) victory. Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) picked up the lone win on the day for VC, while several other Brewers played tight matches against some of the toughest competition the team will see all season.  

"Army was aggressive right from the start, and challenged us for every point throughout the day," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "We improved throughout the day, and it was great to see how positive and supportive this group was of one another. It's something we've been working on as a team, and today was an excellent competitive atmosphere to build off of."

Christensen earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Elle Taylor of Army to earn a win a No. 1 singles, as she picked up right where she left off from a fantastic fall season. Senior Samantha Schapiro was the only Brewer to take a match to three sets, winning the first set off of Allyson Hayley 6-4. Hayley took the second 6-2, before the two played a marathon super tiebreak which Hayley took 10-9. Sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) played a hard fought match at the No. 4 singles bout, but dropped 6-2, 6-2 to Bridget Guenard.         

Vassar will be back in action on Saturday, February 14 to face Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA.
