Spring Season Opener: Vassar Women’s Tennis Notes – Army

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 13, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team will be back in action this Saturday, February 14 to face the United States Military Academy in a dual match at 4:00 pm in West Point, NY.

What to Look For:
Vassar will open up its spring season against Army. Already five matches into its season, Army will look to improve upon its 3-4 record against the Brewers.
 
Fall Rewind:
Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) won the ITA Northeast Regional Singles title, earning singles All-American honors while advancing to the semifinals of the ITA Small College Championships. Senior partners Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) won their singles and doubles flights at the New York State Championships. Sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) also won her singles and doubles flights with partner junior Winnie Yeates. Furthermore, sophomore partners Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) and Shayna Becker (Murrieta, Ca/University) won their doubles flight at the same event. The Brewers won two Liberty League matches against Union College and Bard College, giving them a 2-0 conference record going into the spring season.
 
A Look at the Black Knights:
The Black Knights are 3-4, and have yet to play a conference match. The team brought in five freshmen, one of which is four-star recruit Hannah Dahlem. Three-star recruits Julian Mok and Bridget Guenard are also freshmen to watch.
 
The Army women's tennis team dropped to 3-4 on the season after being defeated by Stony Brook 6-1, on February 8. The Seawolves went 2-1 in doubles to earn the team point. For Army, Nancy Porter and Julian Mok defeated Shtilkind and Dix at third doubles 6-3, but first and second doubles fell to Stony Brook.
 
Full Weekend Slate:
Army will play two other dual matches before facing Vassar on February 14, starting first with UMass today and Rutgers University tomorrow at 12:00 pm. Army will wrap up the weekend against Vassar at 4:00 pm on Saturday. =
 
All-Time Series:
Army holds a 15-5 edge over Vassar in the all-time series between the schools. The last time the Black Knights and the Brewers faced each other was in the spring of 1998, with Army winning 9-0.
 
ITA Standings:
Vassar is ranked 30 in Division III National ITA rankings. In the Northeast Region, the Brewers are ranked 12.
 
Coming up Next:
After the Black Knights, the Brewers will take on the Mules of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Muhlenberg's record is currently 0-2.
