TRUJILLO ALTO, PR (December 29, 2015) – The Vassar College men's basketball team finished its trip to the Puerto Rico Clasico Tuesday afternoon, dropping a narrow 62-55 decision to the Dutch of Central College (IA) in action from Coliseo Ruben Zayas Montanez.
The Brewers (4-5) struggled from the floor for the second straight day, but unlike Monday in a 52-51 win over Gustavus Adolphus where Vassar shot 44.4 from downtown, VC buried just 28.6 percent (4-14) from three-point land. In contrast, the Dutch (9-2) made 10 of their 19 made field goals from behind the arc in earning the seven-point win.
Vassar put four players in double digits Tuesday afternoon, led by the 13 points apiece from sophomore
Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Barrington) and freshman guard
Alex Seff (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee). For Seff, the 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting was a career-high, eclipsing his previous career-best of nine points against Hamilton College on December 5, 2015. The freshman guard also added a team-high four steals for Vassar.
Freshman
Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate) added 11 points, two blocks and a team-best seven boards, while senior
Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) finished with 10 points, making 2-of-4 from behind the arc. The Brewers were 19-of-48 (39.6 percent), but committed just 10 turnovers which was a season-low for VC.
Central was paced by 17 points off the bench from Kyle Smith, as he was 5-for-8 from the floor including three triples. Colby Taylor posted 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, as Central held a 36-27 edge on the glass Tuesday. The Dutch also held a 17-6 lead in second chance points, as well as a 34-19 lead in bench points much in part to the play from Smith.
Vassar is off until after New Year's, traveling to Canton, NY Friday, January 8 to take on St. Lawrence University in the Liberty League opener for the Brewers.
