POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 24, 2015) – The Vassar College women's basketball took a 48-46 lead into the fourth quarter but couldn't hold on as the Brewers dropped a 70-66 decision to No. SUNY Geneseo in action from the Athletics and Fitness Center Tuesday.
Vassar (1-3) carried a two-point advantage into the final stanza, but the Knights (2-1) notched the first six points of the quarter to take a 52-48 lead after an Allison McKenna jumper. VC trimmed the Geneseo advantage to two four different times, the last coming on a corner jump shot from freshman
Nicole Teta (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy) with 1:39 to play.
The Knights chalked up a pair of free throws to increase the lead back up to six with 34 seconds remaining, but sophomore
Samarah Cook (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) posted five of her team-best 13 points to keep the Brewers within four with 16 seconds on the clock. After two more free throws by Geneseo's Dana Cohan, Teta connected on a triple to make it a one-score game. In the end though, Lea Sobieraski ended VC's hopes with a free throw with four seconds left to ice the game.
The Brewers came out hot in the opening quarter, leading for most of the period as Vassar got six bench points and six points in the paint to lead 20-17 at the first quarter break. VC continued to hold a firm advantage, taking its biggest edge of the half at 33-27 after a three from freshman
Alyssa Murphy (Islip, NY/Islip). The Knights finished the period strong though, going on an 8-0 run to take a 35-33 lead into halftime.
After the break, Vassar tied the game at 40 thanks to
Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy), who nailed a triple for three of her nine points on the evening. Geneseo regained the lead, but Vassar rallied late in the third quarter to take a two-point edge going into the final period.
Cook tallied her team-high point outburst on 4-of-8 shooting, nailing three of her seven shots from distance. Sophomore
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) added her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, adding three helpers, while Teta ended with a career-best 11 points.
O'Connell was once again very efficient in limited minutes for the Brewers, going perfect from the floor in her three shot attempts, dishing out two assists and grabbing two boards. Fellow senior
Rose Serafini (Milton, ON/Milton Area) registered six points, eight rebounds and two blocks as well for VC, who shot a season-best 42.6 percent (26-61) from the floor. VC also was much better from the line Tuesday, making all eight attempts at the charity stripe.
Geneseo put five players in double-figures, highlighted by the 16 points from point guard Dana Cohan. Sobieraski finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights, and McKenna also finished with 13 points and six caroms. Kaleigh Cavanaugh and Katie Durand each posted 12 points in the win, as SUNY Geneseo nailed 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from three-land.
The Brewers are off for 11 days before returning to action Saturday, December 5 at 2 p.m. against Stevens Institute of Technology in non-conference action from Hoboken, NJ.
