Brewer Women Fall At Stevens Saturday

HOBOKEN, NJ (December 5, 2015) -- This Saturday the Vassar Brewers (1-4) were defeated by the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks (3-2) by a margin of 70-48.  Despite the Brewers' best efforts, the Ducks held on to a 20-point lead throughout the fourth quarter to come out with the victory, improving to a winning record.

Vassar jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first quarter but was then outscored 18-5 for the rest of the period, allowing Stevens to take a nine-point lead into the second quarter.  Stevens managed to maintain and increase that lead over the second, grabbing 27 boards over the course of the first two quarters, many of which were offensive.  This helped them to score 11 second chance points during the first half, while Vassar only had two.  The Ducks also showed an ability to take advantage of scoring opportunities, scoring 16 points off of turnovers to Vassar's three.  This deficit accounted for 13 points out of Stevens' 16-point halftime lead.

Things didn't get any better for the Brewers in the third quarter, and Stevens took a 20-point lead into the final period.  Much of the Ducks' performance can be chalked up to their full-court press defense, which forced many turnovers and allowed them to maintain control of the game.   The Ducks' impressive shooting from the field also helped the hosts put the game away.

Senior forward Rose Serafini led the Brewers in points (12) and blocks (three) and also had five rebounds and a steal, while senior guard Alex Moon led the team in rebounds (nine) and assists (three).  On the other side of the ball, guard Miranda Ripken had 21 points for the Ducks, as well as five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and sophomore guard Megan Brown led the team with 15 rebounds.  Senior Guard Kaitlyn Astel also scored in double digits with 13 points. .

The Brewers will be heading to New Paltz next Tuesday for another SUNY matchup, this time against the New Paltz Hawks.  The 5-2 Hawks will prove to be a tough opponent, and the Brewers will need to pull out all the stops in order to come out with a win.
