POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 31, 2015) – The Vassar College men's squash team started its home slate off right Saturday morning, making quick work of visiting Siena College with a 9-0 score line from Kenyon Hall.
The morning started out right for the Brewers (1-1) at No. 4, as senior
Ben Kurchin (Rochester, NY/Harley School) allowed just 10 points over the three sets, putting Vassar up 1-0 with a 11-0, 11-2 and 11-8 victory. Fellow senior
Michael Iselin (Delmar, NY/Doane Stuart School) dispatched Jimmy Weimer at No. 6 11-7, 11-8 and 11-6 to put VC up 2-0, and junior
Lucas Fifer (New York, NY/Eleanor Roosevelt) won his third career match to put Vassar up 3-0 after a 11-5, 11-9 and 11-4 win.
The Brewers kept their momentum going at No. 9, as newcomer
Andrew Patton (Barrington, RI/Barrington) moved to 2-0 on the season with an emphatic 11-2, 11-1 and 11-6 triumph. Down 4-0, the Saints (0-1) needed a victory at No. 2 to keep the match going, but VC senior captain
Juan Fernandez (Colonia Chimalistac, Mexico/United World College of Costa Rica) was having none of it.
The experienced captain for the Brewers fought off a scrappy Ed Stumm from Siena at the second spot on the ladder, as Fernandez picked up an 11-7, 11-9 and 11-3 win to give Vassar the victory. Senior
Tim Boycott (Mbabane, Swaziland/Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA) was next to register a win for VC with an 11-2, 11-5, and 11-7 win, while junior
Samuel Hammer (Wethersfield, CT/Kingswood Oxford) moved to 1-0 on the year with a 11-1, 11-5, 11-5 win over Leslie Cotrina.
Senior captain Tim Veit (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) made quick work of his opponent at No. 3, earning a 11-3, 11-4, 12-10 win in the penultimate match of the day. In the final match and with VC looking for a sweep, Brewer No. 1 player
Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) fought off Faizen Rahim from Siena to clinch the white washing with a score of 11-6, 12-10 and 11-2.
The 9-0 win for the Brewers was their second over the last two years, and first since VC blanked Brandeis University back on January 31 last season. Patton, Mencotti and Veit all improved to 2-0 on the season with wins Saturday.
The Brewers will be back in action at home next Saturday, hosting New York University at 10:30 a.m. in Kenyon Hall, followed by the Hudson Valley Individual Tournament at 3:30 p.m. later in the afternoon.
