POUGHKEEPSIE, NY/NEW WINDSOR, NY (October 3, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season on an high note, winning a pair of Liberty League dual matches over Union College and Bard College Saturday. The wins put the Brewers at 2-0 for the season, while Union moves to 2-3 (1-2 LL) and Bard drops to 0-6 (0-3 LL).
"I thought we had great spirit and comradery as a team today," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "We responded well in the switch to the dual match format, and used our experience from our tournaments this fall. Overall, we had a very high serving percentage and returned well. We just played with good energy; this team is having a lot of fun out on the court."
Match 1 Results – Vassar 8, Union 1
Vassar topped Union 8-1 in its first match of the day, sweeping singles while winning two of three doubles bouts.
Sophomores Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) and Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) topped Julianne Loree/Hayley Lough (UC) 8-1 in No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Courtney Geiss (Charleston, SC/Laurel Springs School) and freshman Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Pointe South) were victorious at No. 3 over Eva Blech/Lena Diller (UC) 8-0.
Senior Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) picked up the first singles win on the day for VC downing Julianne Loree 6-0, 6-2. Fitzgerald took the next with a win vs. Paige Webster 6-4, 6-1, while Geiss clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Hayley Lough.
Match 2 Results – Vassar 9, Bard 0
Vassar made it a 2-0 weekend with a 9-0 win over Bard College in the team's second match of the day at the New Windsor Sportsplex. The Brewers swept doubles and singles without surrendering a single set to the Raptors.
Christensen and Fitzgerald were perfect at No. 1, topping Lily Schwartz/Harriette Slagle 8-0. Van Noy and fellow senior Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) also sealed a 8-0 shutout over Amelia Tiemann/Bella Martinez, while Geiss and sophomore Dasha Ivenitsky ( South Salem, NY/John Jay) won 8-1 vs. Lily Zacharias/Jenny Chen at No. 3 to get the 3-0 edge.
Vassar made quick work of singles, winning all six matches in two sets.
Vassar will return to competition next February when the team kicks off its spring season.
