Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Gallagher’s Efficiency Leads Vassar Past Sage In Three Games

TROY, NY (October 21, 2015) - Freshman Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) posted a match-best 14 kills on just 26 attacks, hitting .500 for the night as the Vassar College women's volleyball team knocked off The Sage Colleges 3-0 in non-conference action from Kahl Gym. VC knocked off Sage with scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-20.

Vassar posted a hitting percentage of .203 on the night, the fourth contest of the season in which the Brewers posted an attacking clip over .200. The host Gators (18-9) led during the early in the match, taking a 7-4 lead in the first set. VC responded with a 7-1 spurt, and led for the rest of the game, closing the stanza with five straight points. Vassar hit .400 in the opening set, posting just two errors and 12 kills on 25 attacks.

The second stanza was a grueling one for each team, as the two teams combined on 115 attacks in a period that saw just 27 kills. For the second straight set, Sage took an early advantage, scoring the first seven points of the game capped by a kill by Rachel Liebig. The Brewers roared back into the match thanks to a six-point stretch, tying the match at 10.

Down 14-13, Vassar posted four consecutive points on alternating kills from junior Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) and sophomore Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) to take a 17-14 advantage. Sage answered with a 4-0 run, but Vassar pushed back in front thanks to strong serving from Paige Benson (Elk Grove, CA/Bradshaw Christian School), clinching the set on a kill by Gallagher.

In the final set, the two teams exchanged runs throughout the set, as a team earned a side out on the first serve of their opposition just four times all game. This resulted in long spurts for each team, and the deciding streak came with the score tied at 20, as VC ended the match on a 5-0 run.

Along with Gallagher's solid offensive production, Sams finished with eight kills and two service aces on the evening. Miller added seven finishes and two digs, while fellow junior Sarah Roberts (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber) added four kills. Freshman Lauren Ninkovich (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) had a strong all-around match, registering six kills, two aces and 13 digs.

Freshman setter Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO/Coronado) continued her strong play of late, as the now-healthy setter posted her second career double-double of 33 assists and 10 digs, adding two blocks as well. Senior libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) averaged seven digs per set in the match, finishing with 21 for the match.

Sage got a team-high nine kills from Sara Campolieta, and Siena Wilder chalked up 20 digs to pace the Gators.

Vassar College (12-11) will compete in the Hall of Fame Invitational this weekend, starting action against Amherst College Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Amherst, MA.
