AMHERST, MA (October 23, 2015) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team started play in the 2015 Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament Friday evening, dropping a non-conference affair to Amherst College 3-0 in action from LeFrak Gymnasium. The Jeffs knocked off Vassar with scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-17.
Amherst (17-2) was stellar with the ball all night, as they posted an attacking percentage of .371 for the contest. Amherst also made it very difficult for VC to get a ball down, posting 57 digs over the three set affair while blocking six attacks of the Brewers.
Amherst erred only three times all match, as it started the evening by hitting .345 in the opening set to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Brewers hit much better in the second game, shaking off their nine opening set attacking mistakes to post a .133 hitting rate. Unfortunately though for the visiting Brewers, Amherst posted 15 kills and no errors on 29 attempts to up the match lead to 2-0.
Vassar College continued its improved hitting in the third game, posting 14 kills in the final set of the evening but the Jeffs were too much in earning the match victory. Freshman
Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) again led the Brewers in total terminations, as she chalked up 10 kills on the night.
Sophomore setter
Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) posted a career-high five kills on 10 attacks Friday night, and junior
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) just missed a double-double after logging nine kills and 10 digs. Freshman setter
Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO/Coronado) added 21 helpers and six digs, and senior
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) paced all Brewer players with 13 digs.
The Brewers will return to action tomorrow in day two of the Hall of Fame Tournament, heading to Northampton, MA for a pair of contests. VC will take on Wesleyan University at noon in the first match of the day, followed by a tussle with host Smith College at 2 p.m. in non-conference competition.
