CANTON, NY (October 2, 2015) – It what will go down as a historic day for Vassar soccer, the Brewers took down No. 21 St. Lawrence University in the team's Liberty League opener Friday afternoon. The loss marks just the second of the season for the Saints, and is the first win in a conference opener for Vassar since 2010. VC improves to 6-3 and 1-0 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence drops to 7-2 (0-2 LL).
The Brewers netted the game winner in the 16th minute off a corner kick taken by sophomore Amanda McFarland (Redwood City, CA/Menlo). She played the ball to the far corner of the six where fellow sophomore Jessica Schwed (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) headed it down to senior Kamaria Coley (Washington, DC/Academy of the Holy Cross). Coley finished on the ground inside the far post to give Vassar an early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Kaleigh White produced the best opportunity for the Saints on the day, after her shot rang off the post in the 83rd minute. Despite Vassar being outshot 16-8 by the Saints, both sides put an equal five shots on goal.
Senior Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) earned her fourth shutout of the season in the victory, stopping all five shots that came her way. St. Lawrence goalkeeper Kelsey West finished with four saves.
The Brewers will look to carry today's momentum into tomorrow when the team faces Clarkson University (6-3) in Potsdam, NY. The Golden Knights dropped a 2-0 decision to Bard College in their first game of the weekend today.
