Brewers Draw Clarkson on the Road, 1-1

POTSDAM, NY (October 3, 2015) – Vassar got a late goal from senior Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO/Heritage) as the Brewers managed a tie vs. Clarkson University Saturday afternoon. After trailing for most of the game and second half, VC was able to force overtime and come out of their first Liberty League weekend with four points. VC moves to 6-3-1 and 1-0-1 in the Liberty League, while Clarkson holds a 6-3-1 (0-2-1 LL) record.

Clarkson and the Brewers played even for most of the first half, but it was Vassar that had the better scoring chances in the early going. Clarkson goalkeeper Anna Demasi made one sprawling stop about 15 minutes into the contest and then denied another high shot a few minutes later when she deflected a ball off the crossbar.

Those two stops proved key as Clarkson was able to pick up a goal at the 35:09 mark. Rachel Loecher took a corner kick from the right side, but the ball was deflected back out near the sideline. With a better angle, Loecher then crossed the ball to the far post where Courtney Black was able to connect and knock the ball past senior goalkeeper Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington).

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half, a cross couldn't be cleared by the Clarkson defense or corralled by Demasi. The ensuing bobble found the foot of Brainerd, who was able to finish off the play and knot the game up at 1-1 in the 81st minute.

Vassar had chances in the two overtime periods, including one in the last few seconds of the first overtime. With a few ticks left on the clock, Demasi realized there was little chance for the Brewers to get a good shot off and stopped short on clearing a ball, but the Brewers shot anyway and the ball went into the Clarkson goal, though it was a second past the buzzer sounding.

Vassar finished with a 12-10 edge in shots and a 6-2 lead in corner kicks. Demasi made eight stops and Nichols recorded four saves for the Brewers.

Vassar will be back in action this Tuesday, October 6 to host Wesleyan University at Gordon Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
