POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 16, 2015) – No. 6 William Smith tallied two first half goals less than 30 seconds apart, then added one more in the second period as the Herons downed Vassar 3-0 Friday afternoon. William Smith was relentless offensively, generating 27 shots while allowing the hosts just four. VC moves to 7-4-2 on the year and 1-1-2 in the Liberty League with the loss, while the Herons jump to 10-1-1 (5-0 LL).
The Brewer defense held up well in the early goings of the game at Gordon Field, before William Smith was able to capitalize with two quick goals in the 20th minute. Brie Ruane notched the first of the game for the visitors off a cross from Shay Callhan on the left wing at the 19:38 mark.
The Herons immediately regained possession off the restart, and Krista Longo put a through ball into the 18-yard box to find an open Kara Shue. Shue finished into the right corner of the net to give William Smith another goal just 18 seconds later at 19:56.
VC was able to keep the Herons out of the net for the rest of the half, but still trailed 2-0 heading into the break.
William Smith again brought constant pressure in the second half, and finally broke through with Shue's second goal of the day in the 77th minute. After winning the ball off a defender in the box, she had an open look at the cage and fired a shot into the left side to put her team up three.
Vassar managed just two shots in the half to one of the stingiest defensive units in the country, as the Herons have now secured nine consecutive shutout victories. Senior Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) finished with a game-high eight saves.
The Brewers will have an opportunity to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon when the squad hosts the Rochester Institute of Technology. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
