POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 17, 2015) – Rochester Institute of Technology senior Elizabeth May scored the game-winner in overtime, as the Tigers snuck past Vassar 2-1 Saturday afternoon. Despite holding a 18-8 advantage in shots and 4-1 edge in attempts on goal in OT, the Brewers scored just once as the team moves to 7-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the Liberty League. RIT jumps to 11-2-2 (5-0-1).
After trailing 1-0 for a majority of the game, Vassar began to generate offensive pressure in the second half. The Brewers were finally rewarded in the 71st minute, when freshman Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos) found some space down the right wing. The forward got around a defender and launched a shot from deep, putting her attempt over the Tiger goalkeeper and into the left corner.
With the game tied 1-1, the Brewer pressure continued to create chances down the stretch, forcing three saves in the final five minutes of regulation. VC could not produce the elusive game-winner, and the teams headed into overtime knotted at one.
RIT needed only one shot in extra time to get the golden goal, after a cross into the box found the feet of May in the 18-yard box. She touched around a Vassar defender, and buried the open shot to give her team the victory in the 98th minute.
The visitors notched their first goal of the game in the ninth minute, after Monique Polanco found Anka Parzych in the box. Parzych one-timed the ball into the net, and gave the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage. The Vassar offense was slow to start in the first half, recording just three shots to RIT's five in the opening period.
Senior Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) finished with two saves, while RIT keepers Kelly Rogers and Sienna Fisher combined to make seven stops.
The Brewers will be back in action next Saturday, October 24 when the team hosts the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Gordon Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
