GENEVA, NY (October 16, 2015) – Hobart College freshman Derrick Acheampong's goal in the 18th minute secured a 1-0 win for the Statesmen over Vassar Friday afternoon. The Statesmen improve to 9-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play. The Brewers fall to 6-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the Liberty League.
Acheampong's fourth goal of the year came off an assist from junior Joe Busuttil. Busuttil sent a cross from the right side that Acheampong back heeled into the goal for what proved to be the game winner. The Statesmen out-shot the Brewers' 12-2 in the first half and controlled most of the momentum.
Vassar had a number of scoring chances late in the second half. The Brewers finished with a total of 10 corners, logging six in the second half. In the 70th minute, Vassar earned the first of three straight corners. On the first attempt, senior Jordan Palmer's (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) shot sailed wide.
On the second, senior Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sent in the corner and a blast by sophomore Tanner Sands (Draper, UT/Juan Diego) was stopped by senior Hobart keeper Tyler Serafine. His vertical leap allowed him to deny the chance, but the rebound bounced to senior Nick Hess (Troy, NY/Averill Park) who drilled another shot on goal that was once again punched away by Serafine. The Brewers could not get a shot off on the third corner of the series.
The Statesmen had chances to score an insurance goal, but they couldn't find the back of the net. With just over 13 minutes remaining, senior Jacob Fox and sophomore Zach Poretz broke through the Brewers' back line. Poretz dished to Fox from the top of the box, but Fox's shot went just wide of the left post.
Hobart finished with three corners and a 21-9 lead in shots. Serafine made four saves in all 90 minutes in goal to earn his seventh shutout of the year. Sebastien Lasseur (Cornwall, CT/Housatonic Vly Regional) played all 90 minutes and made a career-high 10 saves.
Vassar will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon when the team faces the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
