Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 6, 2015) – The Vassar College women's basketball team out-rebounded Bard College 61-39 on the evening, shaking off a slow start to knock off the visiting Raptors 60-40 in Liberty League play from the Athletics and Fitness Center Tuesday evening.
The win for the Brewers evened their record at 6-6 overall, while handing Vassar its first Liberty League win of the season to pull to 1-2 within conference action. Every Brewer player scored at least three points and grabbed a minimum of three caroms as well in the victory.
Vassar College struggled in the first half to pull away from the Raptors (4-5, 0-1 Liberty League), making just 18.2 percent from the floor while taking a 20-17 lead into the intermission. In the first stanza, the lead changed hands four times and neither team led by more than four points. With the game tied at 17 apiece, someone should have called
Alex Moon (Mission Hills, CA/Bishop Alemany) butter, because she was on a roll, converting a three-point play to help VC to the three-point halftime lead.
Out of the halftime intermission, as the Lord said you've got to rise up, and that's what the Brewers did. VC netted 10 of the half's first 12 points to take an 11-point advantage, highlighted by a layup by
Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) to make the score 30-19.
VC continued to grow its lead, and see…what had happened for Bard… was eventually a 20-point deficit following two free throws by junior
Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area) with 8:29 to go. The Brewers led by as many as 14 for the remainder of the game, as the Brewers told the Raptors that they didn't have to go home, but they had to get the heck up out of here.
Sophomore
Zoe Walker (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) posted her first career double-double, chalking up a career-high 10 points to go with 10 rebounds, blocking two shots. Junior
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug), who some call the Windex woman because she's always cleaning the class, had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with 10 points.
O'Connell finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, and Moon posted a season-best seven points and four boards. Freshman
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) added seven points and eight rebounds as well for VC. The Brewers made 35 percent (21-60) from the floor Tuesday evening, and were straight Boo-yah from the line, connecting on 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) in the win.
Bianka Bell led the game with 15 points for the Raptors, as Bard shot just 22.2 percent (14-63) from the floor. Tytravia Riley added nine points and nine rebounds for BC off the bench, as the visitors made just 1-of-18 from deep.
Vassar is off for 10 days before traveling to William Smith College for Liberty League action with the Herons January 16 in Geneva, NY. RIP Stuart Scott.
