Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 23, 2015) – St. Lawrence University's Shayna Davner drilled a three-pointer with 22 seconds to go to put SLU up four, as the Saints held on for a 59-57 win over the Vassar College women's basketball team in Liberty League action from the Athletics and Fitness Center Friday evening.
The Brewers (7-8, 2-4 Liberty League) came out of the gates on fire, shooting over 70 percent during the first six minutes of the game. Vassar built its lead up to as much as 11 with 14:08 to go at 18-7, following a layup by freshman
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood). St. Lawrence chipped away at the VC advantage, taking its first lead of the game at 27-25, before Vassar tied the game at 27 on an
Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) layup.
The two teams finished the half scoreless over the final 3:19, as the game went to the locker room tied at 27. Rosenthal and junior
Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) each posted seven points to pace Vassar, while Cara Waterson and Caroline Dalton also finished the opening stanza with seven points for the Saints (11-4, 6-1 Liberty). The Brewers outscored SLU in the first period 16-2 in the paint.
Out of the intermission, the two squads jostled for control of the game, and St. Lawrence posted a mini 8-3 run over the opening five minutes to take a five-point advantage at 15:10 of the second half. SLU saw its lead swell up to as much as eight with 11:07 to play on two free throws by Allison Cady, but the Brewers did not go away.
Vassar countered with an 8-0 run of its own over a span of 2:20, eventually tying the game at 41 with 8:47 to play on a jumper by
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug). After trading buckets for a few possessions, VC regained its lead and held a four-point advantage at 51-47 with 3:33 left after a layup by
Kim Romanoff (Durham, CT/Coginchaug Regional).
The Saints though would take control on the defensive end from that point on, turning a four-point disadvantage into a five-point lead thanks to a 9-0 run that spanned 1:57 of the final 2:12 of the game. During that period, Vassar College went five possessions without points, and the dagger came with 22 seconds to play, as Davner drained a three from the left wing with the shot clock winding down to make it a two-score game. SLU was able to ice the game from the line, earning its first win in Poughkeepsie since January 27, 2012.
Drakeley finished the contest with a game-best 16 points, connecting on 6-of-17 from the field, corralling six boards. Rosenthal added 12 points and nine caroms for the Brewers, and O'Connell finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. All eight Brewers that dressed scored Friday, as the home team finished 21-of-60 (35.0 percent) from the field. Vassar tied a season-low for turnovers with 11, while connecting on 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the line.
SLU had two players in double figures, led by Cady with 12 points and seven rebounds, and Davner with 10 points and six rebounds. The Saints were 21-of-59 (35.6 percent) on field goals, and won the rebounding battle 47-33. Kara McDuffee grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with nine points in the win.
The Brewers return to action Saturday afternoon, hosting Clarkson University at 2 p.m. in the AFC in more Liberty League action.
