POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 29, 2014) – Seniors Andre Cousineau (Altadena, CA/Marin Acad.) and Justin Mitchell (Layton, UT/Northridge) both netted goals, as Vassar bested Maritime College 2-0 Friday afternoon. The win marked a special win for head coach Andy Jennings, as he earned his 200th career victory at Vassar. The Brewers move to 1-0 on the season with the win, while Maritime drops to 0-1.

Vassar controlled the tempo early, pressuring the Maritime defense to produce a series of shots in the opening minutes. It wasn't until the 43rd minute that a cross from freshman Reid Smith (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) produced the first goal of the season for the Brewers. From inside the right sideline, Smith's cross reached the left area of the 18, where Cousineau was waiting to direct a header past the diving Privateer goalie.

VC would carry the 1-0 lead into the second half, where the Brewers continued to produce chances and keep the visitors out of their defensive end. Maritime managed only two shots in the match, as Vassar's midfield and defense dominated possession and 50-50 balls.

The Brewers capitalized on another chance in the 64th minute, as junior Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) charged down the left side of the field to play in a cross. The ball found an open Mitchell on the right side of the box, who buried a shot in the opposite corner to give his team a 2-0 lead.

Vassar held off any late attempts from the Privateers to seal the victory, and give Jennings his milestone 200th win. The Brewers will return to game action this Sunday, August 31 when the team travels to face Mt. St. Mary (NY) at 3:00 pm.
