Results

CANTON, NY (April 28, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team fell to #1 seeded and #14 nationally-ranked Skidmore College 5-1 in the finals of the Liberty League Championships on Monday afternoon at St. Lawrence University's Sammis Courts.

Skidmore's Rachel Plevinsky clinched the title for the Thoroughbreds with matching 6-3 sets in her No. 5 singles win over sophomore Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township).

The Brewers nearly had a 2-1 lead after doubles with the No. 2 team of sophomore Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) and freshman Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridges School Sacred Heart) defeating Plevinsky and Zoe Valella 8-5 and then the No. 1 doubles pair of junior Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) almost bested Lee Ford and Madeline Benn but fell 8-5 instead.

Schapiro's No. 1 singles match had her in the lead in the third set 2-1 before the Thoroughbreds claimed the clinching match. Becker's No. 6 singles against Robyn Baird went unfinished with Baird taking the first set 7-5 but she was then down to Becker 3-2 in the second.

This was the fourth straight Liberty League Championship win by Skidmore as they automatically receive the bid for the NCAA tournament.

The Brewers finish their season with a record of 13-6 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty league.
