ResultsCANTON, NY (April 27, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team only allowed #3 seeded St. Lawrence University two match points as the Brewers got the 5-2 win that puts them in the Liberty League championship game Sunday afternoon.
"It was an incredibly hard-fought battle so proud of how we played composed and determined tennis," said head coach
Kathy Campbell.
After the #2 seeded Brewers got the early 2-1 lead, winning both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, they then went to a 4-2 match score after freshman
Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge School Sacred Heart) defeated Olivia Arroyo 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and junior
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) followed suit with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Elkie Vandenbeemt.
"Emily played a superb match redeeming herself against opponent by closing out the second and third sets with determination," Campbell said. "Sam [Schapiro] had to really battle in the first set but in the end was able to play consistent and precise in the second set for the win."
Sophomore
Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) got the match-clinching win, defeating the Saints' Morgan McNeal at No. 3 singles for the first time out of the five meetings between the two players. She dropped the first set to McNeal 6-0 but then won decisively the next two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-1 to send the Brewers into the championship game.
"We're so proud of Winnie for earning the clinching match in today's Liberty Leage semifinals. She and Morgan have played five times, and this is Winnie's first victory over her," said Campbell. "There were a lot of momentum shifts in the singles matches, but each time Vassar players rallied and raised their games. Our good fitness level was also a factor in our favor. It truly was a team victory."
The Brewers will next take on Liberty League rival and nationally-ranked #14 Skidmore College Monday morning at 10:00 am.
