Vassar Tops Lyons And Pioneers 5-0 To Remain Perfect On Day One Of Seven Sisters

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 12, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team picked up two first day wins against Mount Holyoke College, 5-0 and Smith College, 5-0 to start the annual Seven Sisters Tennis Championships at Bryn Mawr College on Saturday at the BMC Tennis Courts.
 
The Brewers posted an extremely impressive 11 6-0 sets on Saturday between both matches. The real dominance was displayed during the three singles matches against the Pioneers of Smith. Junior Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School), freshman Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge School Sacred Heart) and sophomore Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) all had perfect 6-0, 6-0 matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
 
The two doubles teams also picked up solid wins against the Pioneers. Senior Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) and sophomore Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) took down the No. 1 team of Seema Samawi and Margaret Anne Smith 6-2, 6-2. The freshmen duo of Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) and Connie Yoo (Irvine, CA/Beckman) topped Ruth Yi and Isabelle Eyman at No. 2 6-0, 6-1.
 
The only match in the morning play against the Lyons of Mount Holyoke was at No. 1 doubles. Kantor and Stauffer had to play to three sets with tiebreakers in the first and second. They defeated Ann Elizabeth Konkel and Eman Malik 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
 
Schapiro finished her evening with the 6-0, 6-0 win against Smith and also started her day in the same fashion. She earned the win against Maya Sayarath at No. 1 singles against Mount Holyoke with matching, 6-0, 6-0 sets.
 
The Brewers will next continue with play at Bryn Mawr College for the Seven Sisters Tennis Championships on Sunday, April 13 at 12:00 pm against the hosts before taking on the Blue of #28 nationally-ranked Wellesley College at 3:00 pm.
