Women's Tennis Earns 9-0 Shutout Against RIT In League Match

    ROCHESTER, NY (March 30, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team recorded its first shutout, 9-0 win in dual match play this season against Liberty League opponent, Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday.

    A total of two singles matches and one doubles match saw a Tiger being completely shut out as well. The No. 3 duo of junior Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) and sophomore Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) got the 8-0 win over Margaret Barnstein and Paige Baker. Kantor went on to pick up a 6-0, 6-0 No. 4 singles win over Bridget Avery.

    Freshman Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) earned the Brewers' final shutout match win against Baker at No. 5 singles. Van Noy gave up three games in her first set at No. 6 against Barnstein but came away with the 6-0 second set victory.

    Between No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, the Brewers only allowed a combined three points from the Tigers. In every singles match except for No. 1, Vassar gave up only 11 points through the five positions.

    The No. 1 singles match featuring Vassar's Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and RIT's Maite Vera Antelo was the closest of all of the play in the Gordon Field House on Sunday. Schapiro won in a third set tiebreaker with a final score of 3-6, 6-2, 10-7.

    The Brewers will next host the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, April 5 at 10:00 am on the Josselyn Tennis Courts in Liberty League action. The match is their second to last League match of the season before the Liberty League Championships in May.
